  5.     Violent hatemongering can be an expensive hobby. That's the
  6. message of a $12.5 million verdict handed down in Portland,
  7. Ore., last week against television repairman Tom Metzger, his
  8. son John, their national racist organization White Aryan
  9. Resistance, and two of the three partying skinhead punks who,
  10. incited by WAR, arbitrarily bludgeoned a 27-year-old Ethiopian
  11. man to death two years ago.

  13.     Victorious lawyer Morris Dees, whose Alabama-based Southern
  14. Poverty Law Center specializes in suing hate groups, vows to
  15. try to collect every penny in order to close down WAR, its
  16. newspaper, cable TV show, and 23 telephone hot lines. In a
  17. similar $7 million lawsuit in Alabama three years ago, Dees
  18. managed to bankrupt the United Klans of America for its role
  19. in instigating the shooting and hanging of a black youth. Said
  20. Dees of his latest victory: "The jury has spoken loud and clear
  21. that in this country the First Amendment guarantees the right
  22. to hate people and say what you want, but not the right to hurt
  23. people."
